My good friend, Solomon 'Duke' Brown, and I attended St. Columba together prior to UHS. Duke was one of the finest, natural athletes to grace the fields and courts of play in the Youngstown Prochial Leagues. He was the catalyst of St. Columba teams, who in one school year won every single game/meet without a loss, earning championships in all four sports, a feat never duplicated. In addition, he was a great friend, loyal beyond question, with a heart of gold and not a mean bone in his body. Those who knew him well, really knew him, know the truth of these facts. Fly on Duke, rest in peace my friend.

I didn't get to know Solomon all that well, but I admired his ability to persevere. We know it was a challenge in that school for minorities, and those who stuck it out were strong, admirable people. Darnell wrote a wonderful tribute, and I second his prayer for the Duke in a welcoming assembly above.

Rest in peace Solomon. I can remember Solomon as a teammate and his smile. I remember the summer before our senior year running into Solomon and some of his friends at a st Anthony festival on Briar Hill. There was a group of us who all knew each other from sports. Maybe 6 or 8 of us some white some black. Just talking and having fun when the police decided there was a problem! Solomon was a cadet policeman at the time, I said " Solomon your some kind of cop tell them we're all friends. Well that was a turbulent time and police were nervous and I almost got arrested.  The group said a quick goodbye and moved on. During the Mooney game that year Solomon came back to the huddle with what looked like a broken noose, lots of blood and maybe some dislocation. I know he had to be hurting and he was vocal about it too. I said you gonna be ok, he flashed that smile and said I guess so! A tough kid! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I played basketball with Solomon Brown at Ursuline....and more importantly I played against Solomon in the 8th grade parochial league on Saturday mornings....about a hundred years ago......

He played for St. Columba with Darnell Paul and Frank Kepics....I played for Immaculate Heart....their St. Columba team was unstoppable. ...and without a doubt Solomon was the M V P of that league....no close second....he was at the top of his game in 8th grade....it was truly a joy to watch that type of talent then...

I am so sorry to hear of his passing.....

Solomon and I first met in Sister Leah's freshman history class. He was friendly and always displayed a most endearing smile.

Lord's peace to you Solomon and your family,

Marty

One of the best parochial school athletes, grade school and high school. He was a quiet man. Wish I got to know him better.

Solomon " Duke "  Brown, May you rest in the arms of God my friend. I will never forget your smile that could light up a room! I met you in eight grade during  a parochial league basket ball game at Ursuline. I played for Sacred Heart  and it Was our first game ever in the league, so we got drubbed by you Duke !!! But I will never forget what a natural boarn athlete you were, I never saw anybody move like you. But you Frank Kepics and Darnel , came over to us in the locker room after the game and gave us a word of incauragement . That was class .And I knew we would be friends from then on. I still remember dancing at sock hops with you ,your sister and everybody else who wanted to be a part of the Solomon Brown train . God bless my friend " Duke " . Pete

On July 29, 2017 I attended a memorial service for Solomon (AKA Duke) Brown. It was a gathering of classmates, friends, family and those of us who considered Duke a brother. We reminisced about pass encounters, and episodes, good and bad. The event was full of laughter and was generally a great time. While Duke was alive I didn't get to say my farewells, so I say rest in peace my good friend and brother.

Solomon "Duke" Brown I pray that you are resting in peace.  Brother you marched to the tune of your own trumpet and didn't compromise what you believed in even though it may have ruffled feathers :-)

While looking at photos of St. Columba alimni I noticed Duke standing with classmates to include Alice, Marybeth and Darnell to mention a few, in one photo he displayed that warm mischevious smile I sooo remember :-)  I envy Duke's classmates at St. Columba for they were blessed to experienced a part of him I didn't know.

I truly believe Duke wase most gifted athlete that have walked the halls of Ursuline, he was the "Natural" in whatever sport he endeavored.

Was he perfect, "No" he had his faults just like everyone of us.  There was only one perfect being to walk this earth and none of us are Him.

I pray the pain and feeling of loss Kathy and his children are experiencing will fade away, and that they will continue to live their lives as Duke would desire them to do.

Rest in peace Solomon, may God comfort and Bless your family.

Ciao!!
