James "Jim" Carroll Obituary
James "Jim" Carroll, 73, passed away peacefully on August 25th, 2025, surrounded by his children. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on May 25th, 1952, Jim built a life defined by hard work, generosity, and a deep love for his family.
Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth; his parents, Mary and Jack; his sister, Mary Ann; and his brother, Jackie.
He is survived by his children, Samantha, John (Abbe), Patrick (Emily), and Anna; and was “Poppy” to three grandchildren, Walter, George, and Bonnie, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his partner, Julie; and his loyal dog, Ice.
Jim moved from the northeast to Lexington, Kentucky, in 1979 to begin a successful career in the restaurant business; first with Burger Queen, and later Druthers, before becoming an owner-operator of Dairy Queen. Known for his dedication to his employees, Jim was more than a boss – he was a mentor, often helping team members discover new opportunities and pursue careers beyond the restaurant.
An active member of the communities where his restaurants were located, Jim supported local schools, including Iroquois and Fairdale High Schools, and was proud to be named a Kentucky Colonel. He was also a dear friend of Bill W. for 36 years. Outside of work, Jim found joy and peace on the water. His happiest memories were spent sailing with his children on the Ohio River and along the coast of Maine.
The Carroll family is deeply grateful to the caring staff at Baptist Hospital, especially the palliative care team, and to Hosparus Health for their compassion during Jim’s final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Baptist Health Foundation Palliative Care program.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Friday, August 29th, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 30th, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 2119 Payne Street, with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.
